The Oakland Foundation is delighted to share the following report from GNR8:
Overview: During the recent half-term break, GNR8 Academy successfully delivered a Multi-Sports Camp, providing 42 children from low-income backgrounds with access to high-quality sports and physical activity sessions. This was made possible through the generous financial support of the Oakland Foundation, whose contribution ensured that these children, all of whom are eligible for free school meals, could participate in the program at no cost to their families.
The Challenge: For many children in the New Parks area, financial barriers prevent participation in structured sports and fitness activities. Without initiatives like this, school holidays can be a time of inactivity, isolation, and limited access to nutritious meals. The cost of holiday clubs and sports camps often excludes children from low-income households, leaving them without opportunities to engage in positive, structured activities.
The Impact: With the Foundation’s support, we were able to remove financial barriers and offer an enriching experience that combined physical activity with essential life skills. Over the course of the camp, children participated in a variety of sports, including boxing, football, and team-building activities, all designed to promote fitness, confidence, and social engagement.
The impact of the camp extended beyond just physical activity:
• Physical and Mental Wellbeing – Participants engaged in structured sports sessions that helped improve their fitness, coordination, and teamwork.
• Social Development – The camp fostered friendships, teamwork, and a sense of belonging, helping to combat holiday loneliness and isolation.
• Long-Term Engagement – Several participants expressed interest in continuing sports beyond the camp, with many looking to join GNR8 Academy’s regular sessions.
Conclusion: The success of the half-term Multi-Sports Camp demonstrates the power of community and corporate partnership in transforming young lives. The Foundation’s support directly impacted 42 children who would have otherwise missed out on structured, positive experiences during the school holidays. At GNR8 Academy, we are committed to ensuring that no child is excluded from sport due to financial hardship, and we look forward to continuing this vital work with the support of businesses that share our vision for a healthier, more active community.
Acknowledgment: We extend our sincere gratitude to the Oakland Foundation for their invaluable contribution, which made this initiative possible. Together, we are breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for children who need them most.
